History
UCT is the oldest institution of higher learning in South Africa. It was established in 1829 as the South African College. Between 1880 and 1900, UCT underwent significant changes, ultimately becoming a fully recognized university. It officially adopted the name University of Cape Town in 1918.
The college grew quickly after gold and diamonds were found in the north. This was due to the need for skilled workers, which led to the creation of science labs and mining and geology departments. In 1886, chemistry professor Paul Daniel Hahn convinced the Council to allow four women to attend his class for a year. Due to their outstanding performance, women were permanently admitted in 1887.
Location
Nestled at the base of the iconic Table Mountain, the University of Cape Town provides students with beautiful scenery. The stunning beaches and mountains of Cape Town enhance the overall educational experience, and these natural attractions are easily accessible from the campus. The nearby neighborhoods of Observatory, Rondebosch, and Mowbray are vibrant areas that contribute to campus life. Additionally, Robben Island, a well-known tourist destination, is also located close to the school.
The university's upper campus, designed with exquisite architecture, offers a breathtaking panorama of the city. The setting is ideal for both studying and relaxing. Make sure to visit Jameson Hall, where you'll find ample opportunities for photography and historical artifacts from student rallies and demonstrations.
Student Body & Services
Each year, UCT has about 29,000 students, with 30% of them pursuing postgraduate studies. The school also makes sure to take care of its student body with the help of two important departments:
The Department of Student Affairs (DSA) - this sector oversees all student services and programs, including Student Wellness Services, undergraduate financial assistance, housing, athletics, and recreation. To ensure that all students' needs are met, the DSA collaborates with other partner and support departments.
Student Wellness Services - to ensure students remain healthy and well-informed, this department offers a wide range of medical services provided by a team of qualified healthcare professionals. They cover all aspects of student health, including general consultations and specialized treatments such as primary care, minor procedures, management of chronic conditions, and preventive care. Additionally, they offer counseling and various mental health services, including medication support.
Programs
At the heart of UCT's reputation for innovative education, research, and facilities are teaching informed by research and solutions rooted in African contexts to tackle global challenges. The academic departments at UTC include Commerce, Engineering & the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, and Science.
