Program Advisor
Your Student Counselor is your study abroad ambassador and supporter. They join your application journey when you’ve confirmed you’re interested in studying abroad. At this point, they guide you through each stage of the application, notify you of the documents you need, let you know when your admission results are in, and walk you through the next steps, including class enrollment and organizing pre-arrival tests.

Academics
University of California, Berkeley's Academic Approach
With more than 1,500 courses offered each semester, Berkeley’s Social Science and Humanities program is ripe with learning in inspirational classes if you’re majoring in arts, humanities, or social sciences, biology, or physical sciences.
The dedicated team of advisors and staff navigates you through the process to ensure you craft an academic schedule that suits your career aspirations and makes the very most of your natural talents. They push you to ask questions and challenge yourself in richly diverse discussions as you explore the ways and means of being human.
Courses
You submit your course preferences prior to arrival, and an assigned department advisor will maintain communication with you, so you know where there is course access and limitations. After arrival, you have a one-on-one advising session with advisors to finalize your course schedule. You will be required to enroll in a one-credit course that helps you adjust to life and studies at Berkeley.
You can take three or four classes (each class with three or four units) for a minimum of 12 units.
In BISP – Letter and Science you are required to take Sociology 198: Strategies for Cross-Cultural Learning
- One unit
- Graded on a Pass/No Pass basis only
- Meets once a week for 1.5 hours
- Seminar-style class with approximately 20 students
Course & Departmental Restrictions
The following courses are not available to you through this program:
- Courses in Media Studies Department (The Film & Media department is different, and those courses noted by FILM are available)
- Computer Science
- Engineering
- Business or Haas
- Accounting
- Architecture
- Econometrics

- Journalism

Each student has unique academic goals for a study abroad experience. As you think about studying abroad, your SAF Counselor will help you plan for success and support you every step of the way.
Application Requirements
The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.
Language Test Score Requirements
To prove your language proficiency, you can use any of the following:
- TOEFL iBT: 90 (both MyBest score and Home Edition accepted)
- IELTS: 7.0
- Duolingo: 125
- CET6: 520
- TOEIC: 750
- PTE Academic: 64
TEM: 70
*SAF first nominates qualified candidates to the program. The program sends you an interview invite, after which, if you pass, SAF will proceed with your application

Housing Information
Off-campus apartment
The SAF program fee covers a shared off-campus apartment. Alongside local students, you build a study abroad family in the communal living space and over meals you cook in your shared kitchen. The residence building may have a front desk and laundry.
