Your Student Counselor is your study abroad ambassador and supporter. They join your application journey when you’ve confirmed you’re interested in studying abroad. At this point, they guide you through each stage of the application, notify you of the documents you need, let you know when your admission results are in, and walk you through the next steps, including class enrollment and organizing pre-arrival tests.

Academics
University of California, Berkeley's Academic Approach
This program offers the broadest possible access to all six undergraduate Colleges of UC Berkeley. You have the opportunity to learn firsthand from Berkeley’s renowned professors while studying alongside your degree-seeking peers. You also select to enroll in a more career-focused two-credit Extension course to round out your semester.
Courses
After admission and prior to arrival, you are provided with an online survey to submit courses your are interested in. This does not guarantee enrollment, but it will help your BGA advisor provide the support you need during course enrollment. Berkeley staff will communicate with you directly during this advising process and you will register online for courses prior to arrival. Final registration occurs up to the 4th week of the semester with the assistance and advising of Berkeley staff.
You take a minimum of 12 undergraduate credits, and you can take additional credits up to 18 units, which is invoiced separately.
You have the option take one or two Extension courses from the following areas:
- TOEFL preparation
- GRE preparation
- English as a Second Language
- Courses related to your major
You can take UC Berkeley main campus courses: To view available courses, select the academic term in the course catalog, then the subject of interest. If you are interested in a course that appears under the professional category, you will be better suited to apply to one of our tracks: HAAS Business, Environmental Design, or Legal Studies.
Courses can include Schools of:
- Arts and Humanities
- Engineering (limited course selection)
- Languages
- Mathematics and Sciences
- Social Sciences
Course & Departmental Restrictions
Enrollment in all courses is subject to availability, but the following courses are impacted or restricted and priority is given to degree-seeking students:
- Business – impacted
- Economics – impacted
- Law – restricted
- Engineering – impacted
- Computer Science – impacted
Graduate Courses
Policies differ by department, but non-degree seeking international students at the undergraduate level are not encouraged to apply for graduate courses. For more specific information or clarification on the availability of a specific course at the graduate level, please contact SAF Headquarters.

Each student has unique academic goals for a study abroad experience. As you think about studying abroad, your SAF Counselor will help you plan for success and support you every step of the way.
Application Requirements
The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.
Language Test Score Requirements
To prove your language proficiency, you can use any of the following:
- IELTS: 7.0
- *TOEFL iBT: 90 *TOEFL Home Edition and myBest score accepted
- DAAD: C1
- TEM-4L 70
- TEM-8: 70
- Cambridge C1: Advanced
- Duolingo: 125
- CET scores are not accepted. If you only have CET scores or haven’t taken a language test, you can request an English language interview (awarded at the discretion of the academic committee at UC Berkeley Extension) *SAF first nominates qualified candidates to the program. The program sends you an interview invite, after which, if you pass, SAF will proceed with your application

Housing Information
Off-campus apartment
The SAF program fee covers a shared off-campus apartment. Alongside local students, you build a study abroad family in the communal living space and over meals you cook in your shared kitchen. The residence building may have a front desk and laundry.
