Academics
Arizona State University's Academic Approach
With ASU’s language classes having a student to faculty ratio of 15 to 1, you get considerable personalized attention from faculty—more than is typical at most large universities.
ASU’s language program is the largest intensive English program in the United States, with more than 100 staff and faculty who teach effectively and encourage you in your language learning so you can meet your goals as you take on academic coursework at ASU.
The ASU English language program also offers an extensive thematic elective.
Courses
Concurrent enrollment option is for language classes plus one ASU credit course.
*SAF program fee tuition rate is based upon enrollment in 3 undergraduate credits + 21 hours per week of language instruction.
Classroom Hours Per Week

- Listening/Speaking (9 hours per week)

There are five 8-week sessions throughout the year. There are six levels of English, from basic to college ready. It takes one full session (8-weeks) to complete a level.
There are four specializations you can take for three hours per week, with over 25 elective courses to suit your proficiency level and interest. Each elective track introduces subjects appropriate for each learning level and you progress at your own pace.

- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
- Hospitality
- General Studies

Application Requirements
The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.
Language Test Score Requirements
To prove your language proficiency, you can use any of the following:
- iBT TOEFL: 57
- IELTS: 5.5
- ITP: 490
Students are also eligible if they reach Advanced 1 or 2 level by the second semester of study and get at least an 80% in ALL of the most recent classes. Concurrent enrollment option is for language classes plus one ASU credit course.
Successfully completing Advanced 2 with final grades above 80% or reaching Academic language proficiency scores allows scholars to move on to ASU if they have been conditionally admitted.

SAF housing for this program is an off-campus apartment with roommates. Some apartments may include an on-site fitness center and swimming pool.
