Your Student Counselor is your study abroad ambassador and supporter. They join your application journey when you’ve confirmed you’re interested in studying abroad. At this point, they guide you through each stage of the application, notify you of the documents you need, let you know when your admission results are in, and walk you through the next steps, including class enrollment and organizing pre-arrival tests.

Founded in 1989, California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) opened its doors to students in fall of 1990 and became the 20th campus in California State University’s 23-campus family. Today, more than 14,000 students attend the 304-acre campus in the foothills of northern San Diego County. From here, it is a short distance from some of Southern California’s best beaches and an hour from the US–Mexico border.

Academics

California State University, San Marco's Academic Approach

The English language program at CSUSM gives you the tools to be most effective in your academic studies. With competent note taking, listening, speaking, and academic writing, you feel confident to work alongside local students in the for-credit courses that most benefit your career aspirations.

You join one of six proficiency levels, so you get exactly the tuition you need. In small classes, you meet American and international peers, who become friends as you study together and get involved in the activities beyond the classroom: think beach picnics, cultural events, Cougars games, and other experiences.

Courses

The English Language Program is specifically designed to enhance the academic English skills you need to succeed in the California State University, San Marcos programs, working alongside your academic journey.

While you build knowledge of your chosen specialism, you also attend English language classes, which cover reading, vocabulary, grammar, and academic writing, tailored to your proficiency level. Lessons also dive into public speaking, test preparation, and study skills in 24 hours a week of classes. Your friendly, knowledgeable teachers encourage you to practice outside of class, on- and off-campus.

Application Requirements

When applying to study abroad, you must meet the entry requirements set by the host university - and SAF is here to set you up for success.

The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.

To prove your language proficiency, you will need to provide one of the following:

IELTS:   4.5 minimum sub-score 4.0

TOEIC: 485

TOEFL iBT: 50 minimum sub-score 10

Track B

DET (Duolingo): 100

IELTS:   5.0 minimum sub-score 4.5

TOEIC: 525

TOEFL iBT: 55 minimum sub-score 12

Housing Information

On-campus apartment

CSUSM’s University Village Apartments are on-campus residence halls with a strong community. You share a twin room in a 3- to 4-bedroom apartment, so you could live with 6 other people, creating your own family-away-from-home. For each person in your room, you have a bed, desk, chair chest of drawers, and you share a closet. Beyond your apartment, the village has games room, study rooms, sports facilities, and laundry rooms.
