Academics

University of California, Davis's Academic Approach

With encouraging and supportive course instructors, you have 20 hours a week of language tuition to enhance your English pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and academic vernacular.

You also participate in the university’s Pal Program, which connects you with other students for “intercultural conversation experiences” to practice your English.

Registration occurs before you arrive on campus.

Classroom Hours

The SAF program fee tuition rate is based on enrollment in 20 hours of language instruction per week. 

Course & Departmental Restrictions

Certain courses are extremely popular and may not be available

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Food Science

Special exams may be required for some courses and failing the exam would prevent enrollment. Space in any specific course is not guaranteed, even if you have strict requirements on courses necessary for graduating from your home university.

Application Requirements

When applying to study abroad, you must meet the entry requirements set by the host university - and SAF is here to set you up for success.

The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.

Language Test Score Requirements

To prove your language proficiency, you can use any of the following:

  • IELTS: 5.5
  • TOEFL iBT: 61
  • TOEFL PBT: 500

*You must progress to concurrent study after your first term of language.
