Academics

Faculty from leading global universities take you on a journey into nanostructured materials. The specialists in atomistics, polymer science, synthesis, and biology give you a comprehensive overview of all aspects related to nanostructured materials, encompassing synthesis, modeling, and applications, specifically in energy and health.

They use guest lectures, site visits, and practical simulations to focus on the opportunities and challenges researchers encounter when attempting to link different length scales in nanostructured materials.

Your three weeks of study in Tokyo also take you beyond the classroom—beyond your subject matter—to experience this incredible city and Japan’s unique culture, traditions, and heritage.

As well as site visits to some of Japan’s powerhouse research institutions, you experience Japan’s vibrant culture from every angle—you get breathtaking city views from Tokyo Sky Tree, glimpse the art of traditional tea ceremony in historic Asakusa, and join your classmates for a live sports game.

Courses

At the end of the course, you have an understanding of nanostructured materials across various scales, how to apply modeling and synthesis methods, and can describe current applications.

Housing Information

Study tours are intense periods of exploration. They usually last just a few weeks—shorter than the normal study abroad experience—and sometimes travel to multiple destinations.

During your time in Tokyo, you share a well-stocked city-center hotel room with a classmate. Your Wi-Fi, laundry, bed linen and towels are all provided, and there are plenty of common areas to catch up on study or get to know your fellow classmates.

You are invited to join a welcome and a farewell meal—the rest of the time, you can taste your way around Tokyo in local restaurants, near to your hotel.

*Housing is subject to availability. Alternative accommodation might be arranged, amenities may differ. For specific questions regarding housing, please contact SAF.

Why Tokyo?

Tokyo is a city uniquely its own. It can appear straight from the future with its ultramodern skyscrapers, bright lights, and technology. Mix that with well-maintained and cherished traditions, like tea ceremony, festivals, and kimonos still worn in the streets, and you have a glimpse of Tokyo. Explore all of this and more in this one-of-a-kind city while living and attending classes in Chiba, just a train ride away from both the bustling city center as well as the vast and peaceful countryside.
