WHAT STUDENTS SAY

The Advanced English Language Skill class was small with foreign exchange students, so there were many opportunities to get talk and build confidence because we mainly worked in pairs.

Academics

University of Bristol's Academic Approach

The pre-sessional English programs train you, as a high achieving English language learner, in small groups of 12 to 15 students. You are expected to take an active part in interactive classroom activities, including pair and group work, peer reviews, seminars, and presentations.

You prepare reading and listening texts in advance of class and complete homework as a follow-up to classwork. You are also encouraged to take advantage of any and all online learning environments offered, including the interactive academic grammar.

Courses

To progress to academic program studies, you need to successfully complete the pre-sessional language pathway program.

You apply for either a six- or 10-week pre-sessional program based on your English proficiency score at the time of application and considering the academic program department/major entry requirements, you hope to progress to.

(So if you have 6.0 (overall) IELTS score and want to take academic history courses (6.5 min. requirement), you need to complete the six-week pre-sessional program as a condition of your admission).

You take an end of pre-sessional program assessment to evaluate your English proficiency level improvement.

Classroom Hours

You have 20 hours of classroom time each week. The 10-week course offers 40 credit points; the six-week course offers 20 credit points.

*SAF program fee tuition rate is based upon 20 hours of language instruction per week

Language Levels

Bristol's 10-week course starts in June and the six-week course starts in July. After this, you may take regular university classes with other study abroad students in September.

Elective Courses

Lectures on life in Britain and subjects of academic and cultural interest will be introduced.
