Academics
University of California, Berkeley's Academic Approach
You’re passionate about entrepreneurship and technology. In this life-changing hands-on program, you dive into the process, strategies, and approaches of advancing a startup idea in experiential courses and lecture series exploring technopreneurship in Silicon Valley.
In the cross-discipline Challenge Lab core competition, you work in the Berkeley startup ecosystem to create an innovative product. You navigate case-study-inspired weekly challenges and overcome real-world constraints, use rapid iterative build, and validate development methods to develop a working prototype and a formal presentation.
Courses
The core curriculum of this program is pre-set, but as an SAF Scholar, you will receive a course registration form prior to arrival to prioritize your elective course choice. The department will work with you to enroll you in your first choice elective.
Course & Departmental Restrictions
As part of this program, you enroll in the Entrepreneurial Core, which consists of a lecture series or Silicon Valley Introduction to Finance, a Challenge Lab and one elective.
Core courses:
- INDENG 190G (2 units) Intro to Technopreneurship & Silicon Valley - This orientation class is exclusive to Startup Semester Students. It will provide an overview of Silicon Valley business culture and a survey of topics uniquely related to the creation of new technology ventures. The format will include lectures, workshops and interaction with the Berkeley startup ecosystem.
- INDENG 95 (1 unit) Newton Lecture Series - This lecture series recognizes the entrepreneurial vision of A. Richard Newton, Dean of UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering from 2000 to 2007, by inviting distinguished innovators to share lessons from their own successes and failures.
- INDENG 185 (4 units) Challenge Lab - In a competition-based format, students work in cross-discipline lean start-up teams vying to create innovative products. Teams will navigate realistic weekly challenges introduced through case studies. They will understand real-world constraints, use rapid iterative build, and validate development methods. Through frequent interaction with the sponsors and mentors, student teams will develop a working prototype and a formal presentation.
*Note: Multiple sections of Challenge Lab will be offered each semester. Each section will focus on a different technology topic or theme. You must choose one of the topics to fulfill your Core Requirement.

Application Requirements
The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.
