The summer session is perfect if you only have limited time to travel abroad. The elite UC Berkeley nurtures outside-the-box thinking, and it has a driven, motivated community that gives you the full American college experience in a short space of time. Dive into your rigorous academic studies with confidence in this vibrantly diverse, educationally thrilling environment.

With 6 program start dates, you can fit your experience around your home studies. When you arrive, you craft a program to suit your career aspirations from UCB’s 600 classes in 90 departments. Map your own academic schedule and learn firsthand from Berkeley’s renowned professors as you study alongside degree-seeking peers.

Courses

You must register for courses through your student portal (CalCentral) prior to arrival and will use your SAF Course Preference form to guide your registration. You must register for courses to receive an immigration document. 

Course & Departmental Restrictions

Please refer to the Berkeley Class Schedule for specific course offerings. However, the following courses are restricted:

  • Environmental Design: (such as ) Please talk to your SAF Program Advisor is you're interested in architecture, landscape architecture and design courses in this college—they are often not available
  • Business: Due to its popularity, courses in business administration are often impacted, so if you are interested in business administration courses try to apply early

Graduate Courses

Graduate courses are available, but are ordinarily open only if you have completed at least 18 upper division units basic to the subject matter of the course.

If you have finished undergraduate study but not yet enrolled in any graduate program, you can also apply to Berkeley Summer Session. As a student who completed undergraduate, your records/transcripts will be on a graduate level which you can use to transfer into graduate school.

Application Requirements

When applying to study abroad, you must meet the entry requirements set by the host university—and SAF is here to set you up for success.

The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.

To prove your language proficiency, you can use any of the following:

  • Computer-based TOEFL: 213

  • IELTS 6.5
  • Internet-based TOEFL: 80 *MyBest score less than 3 years old is accepted
