Academics

University of California, Los Angeles' Academic Approach

The Study Abroad at UCLA  program offers courses in computer programming, engineering, project management and many more. Most of the program courses are taught by experienced professionals who place a strong emphasis on practical application.

During your time here, you gain world-class knowledge and skills you can use throughout your career.

Courses

The UCLA Academic Program is a part of UCLA Extension, a department of the school which offers its own course catalog in a wide variety of subjects. You will be considered an Extension student and are able to select and enroll in Extension courses prior to your arrival. Your spot in these courses is guaranteed once you have enrolled.

In addition to Extension courses, students in the UCLA Academic Program are allowed to enroll in main-campus UCLA undergraduate courses to study alongside degree-seeking UCLA students through a process of concurrent enrollment. The process for enrolling in these courses is a little more complicated. University of California schools, including UCLA, participate in a course registration process called ‘course crashing.’ Scholars will attend an assortment of classes for a certain amount of time, seeking to gain permission from the professor in order to enroll in chosen classes.  For example, a student may need to attend 10 different courses in the first 10 days of classes in order to enroll in the 3-4 courses that they need to be full-time.

As an Extension student, however, your spot in main-campus courses is not guaranteed, and a course will only be available to you if there are seats available at the end of the course-crashing process. If you have received a spot in a course that is full, you may be bumped from the course by a degree-seeking student who is given preference.

This process is explained further at orientation and there are advisors who will be able to explain and guide the student better
