Academics

University of Queensland's Academic Approach

You can join a growing and innovative community ideally situated in a diverse and world-renowned city. With over 4,000 courses to offer, UQ has a special class that meets the need of any SAF Scholar with plans to study abroad.

Courses

You need to register for courses prior to your arrival in Australia. Being considered a full-time student at the University of Queensland, you must take 8 units of classes (approximately 4 courses) each semester. You may not take more than 10 units (5 courses) per semester. Course registration is conducted through student portal and some departmental restrictions or approval may apply.

Course & Departmental Restrictions

  • Graduate courses in Chinese translating are not available to SAF Scholars
  • Architecture requires a portfolio submission
  • You must be a law student to take law classes
  • Most clinical health science courses such as medicine, dentistry, vet science courses are not available

You can take graduate course provided you undertake coursework and not just research. The requirements are the same as for undergraduate students. If you’re a postgraduate student at your home university, you’re eligible to take postgraduate level courses at UQ.

Application Requirements

When applying to study abroad, you must meet the entry requirements set by the host university - and SAF is here to set you up for success.

The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.

Language Test Score Requirements

To prove your language proficiency, you can use any of the following:

  • CES: 176, with a minimum sub-score of 169
  • IELTS: 6.5, with a minimum sub-score of 6.0
  • PTE-A: 64, with a minimum sub-score of 60
    • Note: PTE-A Online is no longer accepted
  • TOEFL iBT: 87, with 21 in writing, 19 in reading, speaking, and listening
    • Note: TOEFL iBT Home Edition is no longer accepted
  • TOEFL PBT: 570, with 54 in listening and reading and 59/5 in writing

The SAF program fee includes a shared accommodation with roommates off campus. Some accommodations have amenities such as a pool or fitness center.

Your SAF Program Specialist will coordinate with you to ensure you have arrived safely and settled into your new secure housing.

As you settle in, you will learn about the SAF emergency alert system, our 24/7 phone support, and any safety concerns relevant to you.

Your new university and SAF will arrange social and cultural events so that you can meet other study abroad and local students. Make the most of your adventure!
