DCU International Academy delivers fast-paced learner-centered English language study alongside a choice of two concurrent academic streams. Giving you the opportunity to deepen your humanities and social sciences or business subject knowledge, the concurrent program also takes you into Irish-themed and contemporary topics to improve your English language skills.

Student Counselor SAFFY

Your Student Counselor is your study abroad ambassador and supporter. They join your application journey when you’ve confirmed you’re interested in studying abroad. At this point, they guide you through each stage of the application, notify you of the documents you need, let you know when your admission results are in, and walk you through the next steps, including class enrollment and organizing pre-arrival tests.

Dublin City University is a leading Young University, offering a transformative language-learning experience at its International Academy.

DCU has rapidly established its strong reputation for education, research, and innovation in world-class facilities over its five Dublin campuses and particularly excels in science, health, and computing. 

It equips you with practical, industry-relevant skills and pertinent academic knowledge highly valued in today’s global job market, earning it a top spot for graduate employability in Ireland and in the top 25 in the world.

Courses

Course restrictions 
You can stay in the concurrent program for up to a full academic year and work in classes alongside local DCU students. There is no progression from the concurrent to an academic program.

Class hours
In DCU’s General English Course, you share 20 hours a week of classroom language, learning with peers of a similar proficiency to your own. 

Core and elective courses 
All courses are worth 5ECTS and are continuously assessed. Most courses have no final exam. Your expert language teachers immerse you in Irish-themed lessons and cultural activities that help your English skills flourish. 

To maintain your academic development, you also join one of two concurrent academic streams, taking classes in either the business school or the humanities and social sciences departments. You plot your own course, choosing one or two stream-specific elective modules in either the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies or the School of Law and Government.

Application Requirements

When applying to study abroad, you must meet the entry requirements set by the host university - and SAF is here to set you up for success.

The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.

Language Test Score Requirements

To prove your language proficiency, you will need to provide one of the following:

  • IELTS: 6.0 (with no individual components lower than 5.5) 
  • TOEFL: iBT 78 (no sub-score requirements) 
  • Duolingo: 105 (with no individual components lower than 95)

Housing Information

Homestay

During your time in Dublin, you live with a local family in a homestay up to an hour away from campus. You have a single room with space to study, and you share the family kitchen, bathroom, and living spaces. 

You dine with your Irish family, taking breakfast and dinner with them from Monday to Friday and sharing all weekend meals. This gives you a valuable opportunity to practice your language learning in a safe, nurturing environment.
