It is the ideal spot to observe the social and environmental challenges facing regions affected by mass tourism and explore ways of protecting against unsustainable practices to preserve our planet’s fragile ecosystems.

Through coursework, case studies, field trips, and guest lectures, you join likeminded students in examining the environmental, economic, and sociocultural aspects of tourism development.

You also consider approaches adopted in France to work towards the Mediterranean region’s long- term sustainability—and consider how these approaches can be applied in your home country and beyond.

About the University

About IES Abroad Nice Center

Nice’s IES Abroad Center makes the most of its French Riviera location and year-round sunshine, turning this beautiful stretch of coastline into your cultural classroom. In the city center, you make lifelong friendships and enjoy a vibrant study space with well-equipped classrooms and a study lounge. Just outside is a tram stop, ready to take you to the city’s beautiful beaches, parks, and bustling harborside cafés.

Academics

Your expert teachers encourage you to engage in dynamic discussion about sustainable development challenges, practices, and systems design to transition towards a green economy both in Nice and across France, as well as how those learnings could be applied to your home country. to ensure a more sustainable society.

In your real-life Mediterranean laboratory, you recognize the fundamental principles and key concepts of sustainable development and learn methods to combat the effects of climate change and mass tourism.

Courses

Throughout the program, you will explore the basic concepts of sustainability and their implications for tourism.

Beyond your classroom experience, you will hear from guest speakers and visit local sites that illustrate and complement your in-class learnings.

To make the most of your downtime, the group has a day trip beyond Nice and five culturally rich activities—think cheese and wine tasting, a game of pétanque, or a Nicoise cooking class.

During the course, you work in a small group to compose a Capstone Project that you present at the end of the program.
